A great way to make memories with your family is by taking them on a boat trip adventure in Minnesota. At Bremer Jet Ski and Watercraft Rental, Inc., we love nothing more than seeing families come together on the water having an amazing time. However, the fun and the memories must always take a back seat to safety. So, as you set out to plan your St. Cloud adventure, make sure you remember to also plan for safety with these three tips for safe family boating.
1. Use Proper Safety Gear
The number one thing to keep in mind when talking about boat safety is safety gear. Proper gear must be available and worn at all times while on the water. In addition to making sure each rider has a life jacket that is appropriately fitted for their height and weight, there is other safety equipment that should be on board. Make sure your boat has a fire extinguisher, flares, and distress signals in case of emergency. Also, a very high-frequency radio is recommended for long-range communication, as cell phones rarely have enough signal out on the water.
2. Be Responsible
Another key safety tip is to be responsible while out on the water. While it’s true you’re there to have a good time, you still need to respect the fact that water poses a major threat, especially to children. Make sure everyone on the boat is educated on boat safety and procedures. Additionally, make sure the driver of the boat is not indulging in alcohol. In most states, it is illegal to operate a boat with a blood alcohol content of .08% or higher, so you can get a DUI, just like in a car.
3. Check the Weather
Finally, make sure you are aware of the weather and the different complications that can come with boating in adverse weather conditions. At Bremer, we offer boat rentals all year round, so you may be out on the water in the cold weather. If that is the case, make sure you take extra precautions to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time. Dress in extra, waterproof layers, and pack extra dry clothes and warm beverages for the trip.
